The Treaty & Aboriginal Rights Research Centre of Nova Scotia will be

conducting a Mi’kmaq Oral History Picture Project. The intent is to collect and

document pictures that demonstrate use, occupation and activities by

Mi’kmaq people of the land and resources within the province. This will be

done through a province wide research initiative that will collect,

consolidate, and map visual images which pertain to traditional activities on

the land. Some of our resources will come from outside institutions such as

government sources, the Nova Scotia Public Archives, secondary sources, and

various museums, but we hope to gain the majority of information from direct

interviews and discussions with community members throughout the province.

The TARR understands that many pictures have family, sentimental and/or personal value that cannot be replaced. To this end, a researcher will come to you to conduct an interview at a location that is convenient for you . The researchers will have in their possession digital scanners and will, with your permission, make a digital duplicate of the original picture. The interview process will pertain to the pictures themselves, and basic information such as who is in the picture, as well as where and when it was taken. We would also like to know what was taking place when the picture was taken, and who took the picture. As well, any other additional information you may wish to share will be appreciated and recorded.

As the primary goal is to help establish use of lands by Mi’kmaq people in the province and to tie a visual record to that use, we are looking for pictures from as far back as possible up to the present day that show all types of activities. A secondary goal of this project is to use the information for educational purposes relating to land use and activity. In this regard, we may create and/or publish educational materials of the visual images and pictures we have acquired throughout the project along with the stories that go with them to help tell the story of Mi’kmaq use and activity throughout Nova Scotia.

If you are interested in contributing to this project and have pictures you would like to share, please contact the Treaty and Aboriginal Rights Research Centre of Nova Scotia. We greatly appreciate your time and consideration and thank you in advance.

Sincerely:
